What it means
The ECM detects a circuit fault on the engine oil pressure sensor/switch c circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Engine oil pressure sensor/switch C sends the ECM an electrical signal related to oil pressure. The ECM monitors its C circuit for a usable signal, and sets P2D8E when it detects a circuit fault that makes the reading unreliable.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Oil-pressure warning light may be on
- Check-engine light may be on
- Oil-pressure gauge may read abnormally or fluctuate
- Engine may run noisily if oil pressure is actually low
How to diagnose it
- Record the stored codes, freeze-frame data, and oil-pressure sensor C live data to see when the circuit fault occurred and whether the reading is fixed or erratic.
- Check the oil level and listen for abnormal engine noise, because an electrical fault can coexist with genuinely low oil pressure.
- Locate sensor/switch C using vehicle service information and inspect its connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, damage, or contact with hot or moving parts.
- Check the sensor C circuit wiring and connector terminals for continuity, shorts, and poor connections using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and specifications.
- If the circuit checks out, test sensor/switch C and compare its output with actual oil pressure measured using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded sensor C connector and repair damaged wiring.
- Repair an open, short, or poor connection in the oil-pressure sensor C circuit.
- Replace sensor/switch C if its output fails the manufacturer's test.
- Correct an oil-pressure problem if a mechanical pressure check confirms one.
Can I keep driving?
Because a faulty reading can hide real low oil pressure, stop the engine if the oil-pressure warning stays on or it becomes noisy, and check the oil level before restarting. If the warning is absent and the engine sounds normal, drive only as needed to reach a safe place or repair facility; low pressure can quickly damage the engine.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
