What it means
The electric A/C compressor motor does not deliver the expected speed or torque for the commanded duty. Bearing wear, magnet aging, or load mismatch.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The hybrid/EV control system compares the electric A/C compressor motor's actual speed or torque response with what it commanded. P2D44 sets when the compressor does not meet that demand, which may reflect bearing drag, weakened motor magnets, or an abnormal load.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Compressor motor bearing worn
- Magnet flux degraded with age
Symptoms
- A/C warning or check-engine light
- Weak or no cabin cooling
- Unusual compressor noise
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare compressor command, reported speed or torque, and A/C operation when the fault occurs.
- Listen for rubbing, grinding, or other unusual noise from the electric compressor while checking for weak cooling.
- Inspect the compressor's accessible mounts, connectors, and harness for damage or a loose connection that could affect operation.
- Check scan-tool data for abnormal compressor load or speed response as the A/C demand changes.
- If supply and control checks pass, test the compressor motor and mechanical operation using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Repair loose or damaged compressor wiring and connectors.
- Correct an external restriction or abnormal A/C load if testing identifies one.
- Replace a compressor with confirmed bearing wear or mechanical drag.
- Replace the compressor if testing confirms motor magnet or torque performance has degraded.
Can I keep driving?
You can usually drive if the vehicle operates normally, but cooling may be weak and the compressor could make worsening noise. Stop using the A/C if the noise becomes severe or the vehicle displays additional hybrid-system warnings.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
