OBD-II fault code

P2CFF: A/C Clutch Control Circuit Driver Current/Temperature Too High

What it means

The A/C compressor clutch control circuit reports a control circuit driver current/temperature too high condition. Clutch engagement cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The A/C compressor clutch circuit uses an electrical driver to switch the clutch coil on and off. This code sets when the driver detects excessive current draw or excessive driver temperature, which can point to a coil drawing too much current or overheating under-bonnet conditions.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Coil draws excessive current
  2. Under-bonnet temperature too high

Symptoms

  • A/C may not cool

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and A/C live data for clutch command, engine temperature, and under-bonnet conditions when the driver fault set.
  2. Inspect the clutch coil connector and nearby wiring for heat damage, melted insulation, or a short between conductors.
  3. Check whether the fault occurs only after the engine bay heats up or when the clutch is commanded.
  4. Measure clutch coil current during a commanded engagement and compare it with the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. Test the coil and driver circuit for a short or excessive load using the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair heat-damaged or shorted clutch wiring.
  • Correct a loose or damaged clutch coil connection.
  • Replace the clutch coil if testing confirms it draws excessive current.
  • Address an identified cooling or heat-management problem contributing to excessive under-bonnet temperature.

Can I keep driving?

The A/C may stop cooling, while normal driving is usually unaffected. Turn the A/C off if the clutch or wiring becomes unusually hot, smokes, or smells burnt.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
