What it means
The A/C compressor clutch control circuit reports a control circuit high condition. Clutch engagement cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The A/C clutch control circuit lets the module switch the compressor clutch on. This code sets when the circuit signal is higher than expected, which may indicate a wire shorted to battery voltage, an open clutch coil, or poor contact at corroded connector pins.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control wire shorted to B+
- Open clutch coil
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- A/C may not cool
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and A/C live data to determine whether the clutch was being commanded when the high-circuit fault set.
- Inspect the clutch connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, or a control wire touching a battery-positive feed.
- Check for an open clutch coil and verify its circuit connections against the manufacturer's procedure.
- Measure the clutch control circuit for a high signal and check for a short to battery voltage with the coil disconnected.
- Test the clutch coil using the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair wiring that is shorted to battery voltage.
- Clean or repair corroded clutch connector pins.
- Restore loose or damaged terminal contact.
- Replace the clutch coil if testing confirms it is open.
Can I keep driving?
The compressor clutch may not engage, leaving the A/C without cooling. Normal driving is generally unaffected; switch the A/C off if the clutch or wiring heats up or smells burnt.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
