What it means
The A/C compressor clutch control circuit reports a control circuit low condition. Clutch engagement cannot be commanded reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The A/C clutch control circuit carries the module’s command to engage the compressor clutch. This code sets when the circuit signal is lower than expected, which can happen with a wire shorted to ground, a shorted clutch coil, or high resistance at corroded connector pins.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control wire shorted to ground
- Clutch coil shorted
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- A/C may not cool
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame and A/C live data to check whether clutch engagement was requested when the low-circuit fault occurred.
- Inspect the clutch connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, and insulation rubbed through to ground.
- Check the control wire for a short to ground with the clutch coil disconnected, following the manufacturer's procedure.
- Measure the circuit signal and connector voltage drop under the specified test conditions.
- Test the clutch coil for an internal short using the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair the clutch control wire where it is shorted to ground.
- Clean or replace corroded clutch connector terminals.
- Repair loose or damaged connector pins causing high resistance.
- Replace the clutch coil if testing confirms it is shorted.
Can I keep driving?
The A/C may not cool, but this fault alone generally does not prevent normal driving. Switch the A/C off if the clutch or wiring overheats or smells burnt.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
