What it means
The ECM detects a circuit low fault on the coolant pump speed sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The coolant pump speed sensor sends a signal that lets the engine control module assess pump rotation and coolant circulation. P2CCA sets when the signal circuit is held below the expected electrical range, so the module cannot use the speed reading reliably.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Possible coolant temperature warning
- Engine temperature may rise
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and related cooling-system codes to check whether the low signal coincided with a temperature rise or pump-control change.
- Inspect the sensor connector and signal wire for corrosion, moisture, crushed insulation, or contact with ground.
- Check the sensor circuit's power and ground connections, then measure the signal at the sensor and module connectors against the manufacturer's specification.
- With the circuit isolated as prescribed by the manufacturer, test the signal wire for a short to ground and inspect connector pins for high resistance.
- Test the coolant pump speed sensor itself using the vehicle-specific procedure to determine whether it is internally shorted.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose sensor connector pins.
- Repair the signal wire where it is shorted to ground or damaged.
- Restore a poor sensor supply or ground connection if circuit measurements identify it.
- Replace the coolant pump speed sensor if testing confirms an internal short.
Can I keep driving?
Watch for a coolant-temperature warning and stop safely if the engine overheats; do not continue a trip with rising temperature. A low sensor signal can hide pump-speed problems and contribute to overheating and engine damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
