OBD-II fault code

P2CC9: Coolant Pump Speed Sensor Range/Performance

What it means

The ECM detects a range/performance fault on the coolant pump speed sensor. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The coolant pump speed sensor reports pump rotation to the engine control module, which uses the feedback to assess cooling operation. P2CC9 sets when the signal is electrically plausible but its value or behavior falls outside the expected range or performance pattern.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor characteristic drifted
  2. Sensor mounting displaced
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Possible coolant temperature warning
  • Engine temperature may rise

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live coolant temperature and pump-speed readings to identify when the reported speed became implausible.
  2. Inspect the sensor mounting and its target or sensing area for displacement, damage, or contamination that could affect the reading.
  3. Check sensor wiring and connector condition, then verify the circuit's power, ground, and signal against the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Compare reported pump speed with commanded pump operation across relevant operating conditions using a scan tool, where supported.
  5. Test the sensor response and mounting position using vehicle-specific service information to determine whether the sensor has drifted or aged beyond its calibrated range.

Common fixes

  • Secure or correctly position a displaced coolant pump speed sensor.
  • Clean contamination from the sensing area if the manufacturer's service information permits it.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor connector contact if inspection or circuit tests identify a fault.
  • Replace a sensor that fails response testing or remains out of range with correct wiring and mounting.

Can I keep driving?

Monitor the temperature gauge and stop safely if a coolant-temperature warning appears or the engine begins to overheat. Driving with inaccurate pump-speed feedback can allow a cooling problem to go unnoticed and lead to engine damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
