What it means
The ECM detects a circuit fault on the coolant pump speed sensor circuit. Reading cannot be used reliably for control.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The coolant pump speed sensor provides feedback about pump rotation so the engine control module can assess coolant circulation. P2CC8 sets when the module detects an electrical fault in the sensor circuit and cannot rely on the speed signal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor failed
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Possible coolant temperature warning
- Engine temperature may rise
How to diagnose it
- Check freeze-frame data, coolant-temperature readings, and related pump or cooling-system codes to see whether the fault coincided with rising temperature.
- Inspect the coolant pump speed sensor connector and nearby wiring for looseness, corrosion, coolant intrusion, chafing, or heat damage.
- Check the sensor circuit's power, ground, and signal wiring against the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
- Use a scan tool to compare reported pump speed with commanded pump operation, if those data are available for the vehicle.
- Test the sensor and circuit continuity or signal response using the manufacturer's procedure to distinguish a sensor fault from a wiring or connector fault.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean a loose or corroded coolant pump speed sensor connector.
- Repair damaged sensor wiring or restore a poor ground or supply connection.
- Replace the coolant pump speed sensor if its circuit tests fail.
- Repair the pump or control circuit only if vehicle-specific testing confirms it is responsible for the missing or unreliable feedback.
Can I keep driving?
Watch the temperature gauge and heed any coolant-temperature warning; stop safely and switch off the engine if it overheats. Continued driving with inadequate coolant circulation can cause serious engine damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
