OBD-II fault code

P2C9C: Cold Start Turbocharger/Supercharger Wastegate Actuator B Range/Performance

What it means

During cold start, wastegate actuator B operation is outside the expected range or performance.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Wastegate actuator B moves a turbocharger or supercharger wastegate to help control boost. P2C9C sets when actuator B's movement or response is outside the expected range during a cold start, and the engine module may reduce power to protect the engine.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wastegate actuator or linkage sticking
  2. Wiring or connector fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced engine power

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data, especially cold-start conditions, and scan for actuator B, boost pressure, and related air-path codes.
  2. During a cold start, compare actuator B's commanded and reported positions with boost response in live data.
  3. With the engine off and cool, inspect actuator B's connector and wiring for breaks, moisture, or loose terminals.
  4. Inspect the wastegate linkage for sticking or binding using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the mechanical movement is free, test actuator B's control wiring and operation against manufacturer specifications.

Common fixes

  • Repair or secure a loose or damaged actuator B connector.
  • Repair damaged actuator B wiring.
  • Correct a sticking wastegate linkage if confirmed by inspection.
  • Replace actuator B only if tests identify it as faulty.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid heavy acceleration and situations requiring full power because the engine may limit output. Arrange diagnosis soon, and stop safely if power loss becomes severe or engine operation is unstable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
