What it means
The supply circuit for the hybrid battery contactor control reports a open condition. Contactor coils may not energise as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery contactor control supply circuit provides power for the control that operates the high-voltage battery contactors. The vehicle monitors whether that supply circuit is available; this open-circuit code sets when power cannot reach the contactor control as expected, so the contactors may not energise and the hybrid system may not operate normally.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in supply wire
- Supply fuse blown
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and all hybrid-system codes, since related supply or contactor faults can help locate the open.
- Using a compatible scan tool, check contactor command and status data to determine whether the system is requesting closure but the contactors do not respond.
- With the high-voltage system made safe according to the manufacturer’s service procedure, inspect the accessible low-voltage supply wiring and connectors for damage or a pushed-back pin.
- Check the specified supply fuse and verify supply continuity through the contactor control circuit using the wiring diagram and manufacturer’s procedure.
- If the fuse and wiring pass, test the control supply circuit under the manufacturer’s specified conditions to locate an intermittent or hidden open.
Common fixes
- Restore a pushed-back or loose connector pin in the contactor control supply circuit.
- Repair an open or damaged supply wire.
- Replace a blown supply fuse only after checking for the cause of the fuse failure.
- Repair or replace a failed contactor control supply connection identified by circuit testing.
Can I keep driving?
The hybrid system may have reduced power, fail to charge, or fail to enter drive if the contactors cannot energise. Avoid relying on the vehicle for a long trip; if it will not enter READY, displays a high-voltage warning, or loses power, stop safely and arrange service.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
