OBD-II fault code

P2C01: Fuel Pressure Regulator D Performance

What it means

Fuel pressure regulator D is not meeting its calibrated performance criteria. The code does not identify the cause of the fault.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Fuel pressure regulator D helps control fuel pressure in the fuel system. The control module assesses whether pressure responds as expected under its operating conditions; P2C01 means regulator D’s performance has fallen outside its calibrated criteria, without identifying the cause.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Regulator aged
  2. Contamination affecting regulator seat

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
  • Power loss especially at high load or rpm
  • Possible long cranking time

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live fuel-pressure readings to see when pressure deviated and whether the engine was starting, idling, or under load.
  2. Check for related fuel-pressure or mixture codes, then inspect accessible fuel lines and regulator D’s connector for leaks, damage, or contamination.
  3. Compare commanded and measured pressure during the conditions recorded in the freeze frame, using the manufacturer’s test procedure and specification.
  4. Check regulator D’s control circuit and the fuel supply for faults that could disrupt pressure regulation.
  5. If supply and control checks pass, assess regulator D for sticking or debris at its seat according to the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair any confirmed fuel-system connection or control-circuit fault affecting regulator D.
  • Clean or correct contamination at regulator D’s seat if permitted by the manufacturer’s procedure.
  • Replace regulator D if its pressure response remains outside specification after other causes are ruled out.

Can I keep driving?

Hard starting, stalling, or power loss under load can make driving unpredictable; avoid high-load driving and stop if the engine stalls or will not maintain power. The fault can worsen until the vehicle is difficult or impossible to start.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
