What it means
Same as P233A but with the control line shorted to ground - the ECU measures a low voltage that does not match the commanded duty cycle.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
Fuel pressure regulator C is the third electrically controlled regulator stage, which helps the controller manage fuel pressure. P233B means the control circuit voltage is lower than expected, often from a short to ground or an internally shorted solenoid, so regulator C may not respond correctly.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Control line shorted to ground
- Regulator solenoid shorted internally
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Hard start, no start, or stalling under load
- Power loss especially at high load or rpm
- Possible long cranking time
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and review fuel pressure and starting or stalling symptoms when the low-circuit fault appeared.
- With the ignition off, inspect regulator C's connector and harness for corrosion, damaged insulation, pinched wiring, or a short to ground.
- Use the vehicle wiring diagram to isolate the regulator C control wire and check it for a short to ground as specified by the manufacturer.
- Test regulator C's solenoid winding for an internal short and inspect terminal contact quality using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the circuit and regulator test correctly, verify controller output and fuel pressure against the manufacturer's specifications.
Common fixes
- Repair regulator C control wiring that is shorted to ground.
- Clean or replace corroded or damaged connector terminals.
- Replace regulator C if its solenoid winding tests shorted.
- Repair a faulty controller output only after confirming the wiring and regulator are sound.
Can I keep driving?
Do not drive if the vehicle stalls, is hard to start, or loses power unpredictably, as fuel pressure control may fail under load. If symptoms are mild and it runs steadily, limit driving and avoid high speeds or heavy acceleration until diagnosed.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
