OBD-II fault code

P2BE9: Hybrid/EV Battery Precharge Contactor Control Circuit B Range/Performance

What it means

The control circuit B for the hybrid battery precharge contactor reports a range/performance condition. Pre-charging the DC link before main contactor closure cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Precharge contactor control circuit B commands the contactor that brings the DC link voltage up before the main battery contactors close. P2BE9 sets when the circuit's response is outside the expected range, which can point to excessive resistance in the coil or wiring or a faulty contactor driver.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. High resistance in contactor coil or wiring
  2. Contactor driver fault

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for other precharge or contactor codes that may explain the circuit B performance fault.
  2. Inspect accessible circuit B connectors and wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, heat damage, or poor routing.
  3. Following the manufacturer's high-voltage safety procedure, measure circuit B continuity and resistance and compare them with the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Test the precharge contactor B coil and confirm its response under the specified conditions.
  5. If the coil and wiring meet specification, follow the manufacturer's procedure to evaluate the contactor driver.

Common fixes

  • Clean or repair high-resistance connections in circuit B.
  • Repair damaged wiring or terminals in the precharge contactor B circuit.
  • Replace the precharge contactor B if its coil response is outside specification.
  • Repair or replace the contactor driver only if the wiring and contactor pass their specified tests.

Can I keep driving?

A poor precharge response can prevent READY mode or interrupt charging, leaving the vehicle unable to operate normally. Avoid repeated start attempts or high-voltage work; arrange safe diagnosis if the vehicle will not enter READY or shows a high-voltage warning.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
