OBD-II fault code

P2BE8: Hybrid/EV Battery Precharge Contactor Control Circuit B Open

What it means

The control circuit B for the hybrid battery precharge contactor reports a open condition. Pre-charging the DC link before main contactor closure cannot be commanded reliably.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The battery precharge contactor control circuit B operates the contactor that charges the DC link before the main high-voltage contactors close. P2BE8 sets when the hybrid control module detects an open in circuit B, so it may be unable to command the precharge sequence reliably.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open in contactor control wire
  2. Open contactor coil

Symptoms

  • EV/hybrid system warning light on
  • Reduced power output or limp mode
  • Charging may fail or be slowed
  • Reduced electric range

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check for related precharge, contactor, or high-voltage system codes before clearing anything.
  2. Inspect accessible circuit B wiring and connectors for damage, loose connections, corrosion, or a pushed-back terminal.
  3. Using the manufacturer's diagram and safe high-voltage service procedure, check circuit B wiring for an open.
  4. Test the precharge contactor B coil and its circuit connections against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuit and coil pass, check the control module output only using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect circuit B connectors securely and correct displaced terminals.
  • Repair an open or damaged wire in the precharge contactor B control circuit.
  • Replace the precharge contactor B if its coil is open or fails the specified test.
  • Recheck the precharge sequence using the manufacturer's verification procedure.

Can I keep driving?

This fault can prevent the vehicle from entering READY or accepting a charge, and high-voltage operation may be disabled. Do not attempt high-voltage repairs yourself; if the vehicle will not enter READY or shows a high-voltage warning, arrange safe transport for diagnosis.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
