What it means
The hybrid control module detects a circuit low fault on the high-voltage battery coolant level sensor. Coolant loss in the battery loop cannot be detected reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery coolant level sensor circuit tells the hybrid control module whether the battery cooling loop has enough coolant. P2BE2 sets when the sensor signal is pulled below the expected range, commonly by a signal wire short to ground, an internally shorted sensor, or poor connector contact.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Internal sensor short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review the live level-sensor value and related hybrid-system codes before clearing them.
- Check the battery coolant reservoir and cooling loop for actual coolant loss so a circuit fault does not distract from a low level.
- With the vehicle safely powered down, inspect the sensor connector for corrosion, damaged terminals, and wiring rubbed through to ground.
- Use the manufacturer's wiring diagram to test the signal wire for a short to ground and check connector continuity.
- If the harness is sound, test the sensor against the manufacturer's specification to determine whether it is internally shorted.
Common fixes
- Clean or repair corroded connector terminals and ensure a secure connection.
- Repair a signal wire shorted to ground and protect it from rubbing or moisture.
- Replace the level sensor if it fails the specified electrical test.
- Repair any coolant leak and restore the correct coolant level using the specified procedure.
Can I keep driving?
Power or charging may be limited, and the module may not reliably detect low battery coolant. Keep driving to a minimum and stop if a battery temperature warning or sudden power reduction occurs.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
