What it means
The hybrid control module detects a range/performance fault on the high-voltage battery coolant level sensor. Coolant loss in the battery loop cannot be detected reliably.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The battery coolant level sensor reports coolant level to the hybrid control module. P2BE1 sets when the sensor's reading is outside the expected range or does not behave as expected, even though the circuit is not necessarily open or shorted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Float stuck on guide rod
- Sensor characteristic drifted
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- EV/hybrid system warning light on
- Reduced power output or limp mode
- Charging may fail or be slowed
- Reduced electric range
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare the live battery coolant level reading with the actual level in the reservoir.
- Check for coolant loss or a leak in the battery cooling loop, since a low level can make the reported condition significant.
- With the vehicle safely powered down according to service information, inspect the sensor connector and wiring for damage or poor contact.
- If the design allows inspection without disturbing high-voltage components, check whether the sensor float moves freely on its guide rod.
- Test the sensor response across its operating range against the manufacturer's specification, then check wiring if the response is abnormal.
Common fixes
- Correct the coolant level using the vehicle's specified coolant and filling procedure.
- Repair a battery cooling loop leak identified during inspection.
- Free a sticking float or replace the sensor assembly if the float cannot move correctly.
- Replace a sensor that has drifted outside its specified response range.
Can I keep driving?
The hybrid system may restrict power or charging, and an inaccurate reading can hide falling battery coolant. Avoid hard acceleration and long trips until the level and sensor have been checked, especially if a temperature warning appears.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
