OBD-II fault code

P2B60: Engine Coolant Flow Control Valve Position Sensor Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The engine coolant flow control valve reports a position sensor circuit range/performance condition. Coolant routing between engine and radiator branches cannot be commanded as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The position sensor on the engine coolant flow control valve lets the control module compare actual valve travel with the commanded position as coolant is routed between engine and radiator branches. P2B60 sets when the signal is present but its value or response falls outside the expected range or does not track the command, rather than simply being stuck low or high.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor offset drifted
  2. Linkage between sensor and valve loose
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Engine temperature may fluctuate or run higher than usual
  • Cabin heat may be weak or inconsistent

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and graph commanded versus reported valve position to find when and how the readings diverge.
  2. With the engine cool, inspect the sensor-to-valve linkage for looseness and check the connector and harness for damage that could distort the reading.
  3. Command the valve through its available positions with a scan tool and confirm that reported sensor position changes smoothly and consistently.
  4. Check sensor supply, ground, and signal circuits using the wiring diagram and compare results with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the circuits and linkage are sound, test the sensor for offset or drift across its travel and replace it if its output is outside the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose linkage between the position sensor and coolant valve.
  • Repair damaged wiring or clean and secure poor connector contacts.
  • Replace a position sensor that has drifted outside its calibration range.
  • Replace the coolant flow control valve assembly if the sensor is not serviced separately.

Can I keep driving?

Keep trips short and monitor the temperature gauge because the valve may not route coolant as commanded. Stop if the engine temperature climbs; overheating can damage the engine, and cabin heat may fluctuate.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
