OBD-II fault code

P2B5F: Engine Coolant Flow Control Valve Position Sensor Circuit High

What it means

The engine coolant flow control valve reports a position sensor circuit high condition. Coolant routing between engine and radiator branches cannot be commanded as expected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The engine coolant flow control valve's position sensor reports valve movement to the control module as coolant is routed between engine and radiator branches. P2B5F sets when the sensor circuit signal is higher than the module expects, so the module may be unable to verify the valve's commanded position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to B+
  2. Open position sensor
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Engine temperature may fluctuate or run higher than usual
  • Cabin heat may be weak or inconsistent

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live valve-position readings to establish when the high signal appears and whether it changes as the valve is commanded.
  2. With the engine cool, inspect the sensor connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, or a signal wire contacting a power feed.
  3. Check the sensor connector pins for corrosion or poor contact that could disrupt the signal.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to test for a short to B+ and check continuity through the signal circuit and its connections.
  5. If the wiring checks out, test the position sensor against the manufacturer's specification; an open sensor may produce an implausibly high reading.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose position-sensor connector terminals.
  • Repair a signal wire short to B+ or an open in the sensor circuit.
  • Replace a failed coolant flow control valve position sensor or valve assembly, as applicable.

Can I keep driving?

Limit driving to a short trip to a safe place or repair facility and monitor engine temperature. Stop if it rises abnormally, since incorrect coolant routing can lead to overheating and weak or inconsistent cabin heat.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
