What it means
The trim adjustment for the pumping current of the intake air oxygen sensor on bank 2 reports a circuit high condition. Wide-band lambda regulation on the intake side is impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The bank 2 intake-air oxygen sensor’s wide-band pump cell is adjusted through a pumping-current trim circuit monitored by the control module. P2AEB means the trim circuit is reading electrically high, which can be caused by a short to battery voltage or an open within the pump cell.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Pump current wire shorted to B+
- Open pump cell
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Increased fuel consumption
- Possible rough idle or hesitation
- Failed emissions test
How to diagnose it
- Capture freeze-frame data and compare bank 2 intake-air sensor readings and fuel corrections with other available data to establish the fault conditions.
- Inspect the bank 2 sensor connector for corrosion, poor seating, or damaged terminals that could interrupt the trim circuit.
- Check the trim-circuit harness for melted insulation or contact with a battery-voltage feed.
- Using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and method, test for a short to battery voltage with the sensor and module isolated as instructed.
- If the harness is sound, test the bank 2 sensor pump cell and trim path to the manufacturer's specification for an internal open.
Common fixes
- Repair a pumping-current trim wire shorted to battery voltage.
- Restore proper contact by cleaning or replacing corroded or damaged connector terminals.
- Repair any heat-damaged wiring in the bank 2 sensor harness.
- Replace the bank 2 intake-air oxygen sensor if its pump cell is internally open.
Can I keep driving?
A short, gentle drive may be possible when the engine runs normally, but fuel economy and emissions can worsen while bank 2 intake-side regulation is affected. Stop driving if rough running or a significant loss of power develops.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
