What it means
The trim adjustment for the pumping current of the intake air oxygen sensor on bank 2 reports a circuit low condition. Wide-band lambda regulation on the intake side is impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The wide-band intake-air oxygen sensor on bank 2 uses a pump cell, and the control module adjusts its operation through the pumping-current trim circuit. P2AEA sets when that trim circuit is detected at an abnormally low electrical level, which may result from a ground short, an internal sensor short, or poor corroded connections.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Pump current wire shorted to ground
- Internal short in pump cell
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Increased fuel consumption
- Possible rough idle or hesitation
- Failed emissions test
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check bank 2 intake-air sensor readings and fuel corrections to see when the low condition is present.
- Inspect the bank 2 sensor connector for corrosion, moisture, loose fit, or terminals with poor contact.
- Trace the pumping-current trim wire and look for rubbed-through insulation or contact with ground.
- Use the manufacturer's diagram and test procedure to check for a short to ground, isolating the sensor and control module as directed.
- If the harness is not grounded, test the bank 2 sensor pump cell and trim circuit according to the manufacturer's procedure for an internal short.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded bank 2 sensor connector contacts.
- Repair the trim-circuit wire if it is shorted to ground.
- Replace damaged connector terminals that cannot maintain sound contact.
- Replace the bank 2 intake-air oxygen sensor if its pump-cell trim circuit is internally shorted.
Can I keep driving?
You can generally drive gently for a short distance if the engine remains smooth, but impaired bank 2 intake-side regulation can increase fuel use and emissions. Avoid prolonged driving if it starts to hesitate or idle roughly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
