What it means
The pumping current of the intake air oxygen sensor on bank 2 reports a circuit low condition. Wide-band lambda regulation on the intake side is impaired.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The bank 2 intake-air oxygen sensor’s wide-band pump cell uses a pumping-current circuit monitored by the control module. P2AED sets when that circuit is read at an abnormally low electrical level, often from a wire shorted to ground, an internal sensor short, or corroded high-resistance contacts.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Pump current wire shorted to ground
- Internal short in pump cell
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Increased fuel consumption
- Possible rough idle or hesitation
- Failed emissions test
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and review bank 2 intake-air sensor readings to see whether the low circuit condition is constant or intermittent.
- Inspect the bank 2 sensor connector for corrosion, moisture, loose fit, or damaged terminals.
- Check the pumping-current wire for chafing or insulation damage that could let it touch ground.
- Follow the manufacturer's wiring diagram and procedure to test for a ground short, isolating the sensor and module as directed.
- If the wiring is not grounded, test the bank 2 sensor pump cell for an internal short using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose bank 2 sensor connector contacts.
- Repair the pumping-current wire where it is shorted to ground.
- Replace connector terminals that are damaged or cannot maintain a reliable connection.
- Replace the bank 2 intake-air oxygen sensor if its pump cell is internally shorted.
Can I keep driving?
A short, gentle drive is generally possible if the engine runs smoothly, but impaired bank 2 intake-side regulation can increase fuel use and emissions. Avoid extended driving if rough idle or hesitation develops.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
