OBD-II fault code

P2AD5: Intermediate System Voltage High

What it means

The intermediate system voltage is above the calibrated limit. The code does not by itself identify a particular hybrid architecture or cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The intermediate-voltage section of an electrified vehicle's power system carries energy between components such as the battery and power electronics; its exact layout varies by vehicle. P2AD5 sets when the monitored intermediate voltage rises above its calibrated limit, which can occur during regeneration overshoot or abnormal battery-management cell balancing.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Regenerative braking overshoot
  2. BMS cell balancing off - voltage spikes

Symptoms

  • Hybrid-system warning light may be on
  • Reduced power or limited operating mode
  • Vehicle may not enter ready mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and hybrid-system live data to determine whether the high voltage occurred during regenerative braking, charging, or another operating condition.
  2. Check 12-volt supply condition and connections, then scan for related battery, inverter, and regenerative-braking faults.
  3. Review available battery-management data for cell-voltage imbalance or voltage spikes around the time the code set.
  4. Have the intermediate-voltage signal and its behavior during controlled operation checked with vehicle-rated diagnostic equipment against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the reading is confirmed high, test regenerative control and battery-management functions, then assess the DC-link components using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Correct a weak 12-volt supply or poor low-voltage connection if it is disturbing system control.
  • Repair a verified regenerative-braking control or wiring fault causing voltage overshoot.
  • Correct a confirmed battery-management or cell-balancing fault.
  • Replace a high-voltage component only after testing confirms it is outside the manufacturer's specification.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle limits power, displays a hybrid-system warning, or will not enter ready mode, stop safely and arrange service or recovery. Avoid relying on regenerative braking or continuing a long journey; further voltage excursions can trigger reduced-power operation, and high-voltage components require trained handling.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
