OBD-II fault code

P2AD4: Intermediate System Voltage Low

What it means

The intermediate system voltage is below the calibrated limit. The code does not by itself identify a particular hybrid architecture or cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The intermediate-voltage section of an electrified vehicle's power system carries energy between components such as the battery and power electronics; its exact layout varies by vehicle. P2AD4 sets when the monitored intermediate voltage falls below its calibrated limit, potentially under load if battery output is low or a DC-link capacitor has degraded.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. HV battery output low under load
  2. DC-link capacitor aged - increased ESR

Symptoms

  • Hybrid-system warning light may be on
  • Reduced power or limited operating mode
  • Vehicle may not enter ready mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and hybrid-system live data to determine whether the low voltage occurred during acceleration, regeneration, or a start attempt.
  2. Check the 12-volt battery condition and related low-voltage connections, since weak supply voltage can affect system operation and diagnosis.
  3. Review available battery and inverter fault data for indications of low high-voltage battery output or a related power-electronics fault.
  4. Have the intermediate-voltage reading and its change under operating conditions checked with vehicle-rated diagnostic equipment against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the measured voltage remains low, test the high-voltage battery output and DC-link capacitor according to the vehicle manufacturer's service procedure.

Common fixes

  • Correct a weak 12-volt battery or poor low-voltage connection if it is affecting system operation.
  • Repair a verified high-voltage connection or component fault identified during diagnosis.
  • Replace or service the high-voltage battery if its output fails the manufacturer's specification.
  • Replace a degraded DC-link capacitor if testing confirms excessive deterioration.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle shows reduced power or will not enter ready mode, stop somewhere safe and arrange appropriate service or recovery; do not rely on it for a journey. Continued operation can lead to further power limitation or loss of propulsion, and high-voltage components require trained handling.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
