What it means
The reductant pump motor position signal does not match plausibility checks against related signals. Sensor drift.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The reductant pump motor moves AdBlue/DEF through the emissions-treatment system, and its position sensor reports the motor's position to the engine control module. P2AD7 sets when that position signal is present but does not behave plausibly compared with related system readings, indicating sensor drift or a circuit problem.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Position sensor fault
- Wiring or connector fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light or NOx warning on
- AdBlue/DEF level or quality warning
- Possible no-start countdown after ignore period
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and scan for related reductant-system faults, then compare live pump position data with pump commands and other available system readings.
- Inspect the pump position-sensor connector and harness for corrosion, fluid intrusion, loose terminals, or damage that could distort the signal.
- Observe the position reading while the pump is commanded through its operating range and note whether it changes smoothly and consistently.
- Check the sensor signal, power, and ground circuits for intermittent resistance or voltage drop using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
- If the wiring is sound, test the position sensor for drift and replace it only if its output fails the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Repair loose, corroded, or damaged pump position-sensor wiring and connectors.
- Correct poor sensor power or ground connections that make the reading unstable.
- Replace the reductant pump motor position sensor if it fails the plausibility or specification checks.
- Replace the pump assembly if testing shows the sensor cannot be serviced separately or the assembly is faulty.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle may remain driveable initially, but inaccurate pump-position feedback can impair emissions control and an AdBlue/DEF warning may progress to a restart restriction countdown. Arrange repair promptly and heed any countdown shown.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
