What it means
The control module detects a range or performance fault in the reference voltage circuit for the intake air oxygen sensor on bank 1. The sensor reading may be unreliable.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The intake air oxygen sensor on bank 1 reports oxygen content in the intake air, and its reference circuit must stay within the expected range for the reading to be trusted. P2AC0 sets when the control module sees that circuit drift outside its acceptable range or behave inconsistently, rather than simply disappear.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Reference voltage drifted from nominal
- High-resistance contact in connector
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Increased fuel consumption
- Possible rough idle or hesitation
- Failed emissions test
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and compare bank 1 sensor and fuel-trim live data with bank 2, if fitted, to see when the range fault appears.
- Inspect the bank 1 intake air oxygen sensor connector and reference wiring for corrosion, loose pins, heat damage or contamination.
- Measure the bank 1 reference voltage at the sensor connector under the conditions specified by the manufacturer and look for drift or instability.
- Check connector contact quality and reference-wire continuity for excessive resistance or intermittent connection.
- If the circuit remains within specification, test the bank 1 sensor response and calibration before considering sensor replacement.
Common fixes
- Clean or repair high-resistance terminals at the bank 1 sensor connector.
- Repair damaged bank 1 reference wiring or a poor ground or connection identified by testing.
- Reconnect and secure a loose bank 1 sensor connector.
- Replace the bank 1 intake air oxygen sensor if its reference behavior or response is outside the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
Gentle driving is generally possible if the engine runs smoothly, though fuel consumption can rise and emissions may exceed limits. Limit driving if hesitation or rough idle develops.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
