OBD-II fault code

P2AC4: Intake Air O2 Sensor Reference Voltage Circuit Range/Performance Bank 2

What it means

The control module detects a range or performance fault in the reference voltage circuit for the intake air oxygen sensor on bank 2. The sensor reading may be unreliable.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The intake air oxygen sensor on bank 2 measures oxygen in the intake air, and its reference circuit must remain within an expected range for the control module to trust the reading. P2AC4 sets when the bank 2 reference voltage drifts out of range or behaves inconsistently, indicating a performance fault rather than a complete open.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Reference voltage drifted from nominal
  2. High-resistance contact in connector
  3. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible rough idle or hesitation
  • Failed emissions test

How to diagnose it

  1. Capture freeze-frame data and compare bank 2 sensor and fuel-trim live readings with bank 1, if fitted, to identify when the range fault occurs.
  2. Inspect the bank 2 sensor connector and reference harness for corrosion, loose pins, contamination or heat damage.
  3. Measure the bank 2 reference voltage at the sensor connector under the manufacturer's specified conditions and check for drift or instability.
  4. Test connector contact quality and reference-wire continuity for excessive resistance or intermittent contact.
  5. If the circuit tests within specification, assess bank 2 sensor response and calibration before deciding whether it has aged or failed.

Common fixes

  • Clean or repair high-resistance contacts at the bank 2 sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged bank 2 reference wiring or poor connections found during testing.
  • Secure a loose bank 2 sensor connector.
  • Replace the bank 2 intake air oxygen sensor if its voltage or response remains outside the manufacturer's specification.

Can I keep driving?

Gentle driving is generally possible if the engine runs smoothly, but fuel consumption may increase and emissions may be affected. Limit driving if rough idle or hesitation appears.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
