What it means
The output driver for the wastegate actuator B reports current or junction temperature above its protection threshold. Stalled actuator or short to ground.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The wastegate actuator moves a turbocharger or supercharger wastegate to regulate boost. The control module monitors the electrical driver for actuator B and sets P2ABE when its current draw or driver temperature exceeds the protection limit, which can happen if the actuator is stuck or its control wire is shorted to ground.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wastegate actuator mechanically jammed
- Control wire shorted to ground
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced engine power or boost
- Possible limp mode
How to diagnose it
- Save freeze-frame data and check boost and actuator-related live data to see whether reduced power began during a high-load command.
- With the engine off, inspect actuator B, its linkage and nearby harness for binding, damage, chafing or a wire touching ground.
- Check the actuator B connector for corrosion, loose terminals or water, and make sure the pins are seated.
- Use scan-tool output controls, if available, to command actuator B and compare its movement and reported current with the manufacturer's specification.
- With power isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test the actuator B control wire for a short to ground and check the actuator for an internal fault.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed or grounded actuator B wiring and secure it away from hot or moving parts.
- Clean or repair loose, corroded or damaged actuator B connector terminals.
- Free or repair a mechanically binding wastegate linkage or actuator mechanism.
- Replace a failed wastegate actuator B or its driver as identified by circuit testing.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid hard acceleration and towing because the engine may have reduced or unpredictable boost and may enter limp mode. Stop driving if power drops sharply or the engine behaves abnormally, since a stuck wastegate can worsen boost control.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
