OBD-II fault code

P2ABD: Turbocharger/Supercharger Wastegate Actuator A Driver Current/Temperature Too High

What it means

The output driver for the wastegate actuator A reports current or junction temperature above its protection threshold. Stalled actuator or short to ground.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Wastegate actuator A is driven by an electronic output stage that controls turbocharger boost, while the module monitors the driver's electrical load and temperature. P2ABD sets when that driver detects excessive current or heat, often because actuator A is jammed or its control wire is shorted to ground.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wastegate actuator mechanically jammed
  2. Control wire shorted to ground

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced engine power or boost
  • Possible limp mode

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and related boost-control codes to see when actuator A's driver current or temperature fault occurred.
  2. With the ignition off, inspect actuator A's connector and control wiring for melted insulation, chafing, corrosion, or a short to ground.
  3. Check the actuator linkage for binding or obstruction without forcing it, since a mechanically stuck wastegate can overload the driver.
  4. Test the actuator winding and control circuit for shorts or abnormal resistance against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring and actuator pass, check the module output driver for damage before deciding whether it needs repair.

Common fixes

  • Repair a control wire shorted to ground or damaged actuator A wiring.
  • Clean and secure a corroded or loose actuator A connector.
  • Free or repair a mechanically jammed wastegate linkage.
  • Replace the failed wastegate actuator A after confirming the control circuit is sound.

Can I keep driving?

Boost control may be limited and the engine may enter limp mode, so avoid hard acceleration, towing, and high-speed driving. If power is severely reduced or the engine behaves unpredictably, stop in a safe place and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
