OBD-II fault code

P2ABB: Wastegate Position Sensor B Circuit Low

What it means

Voltage on the wastegate position sensor B signal line is below the expected window. Wire shorted to ground or sensor short.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Wastegate position sensor B reports turbocharger wastegate actuator position to the engine control module. P2ABB is set when sensor B's signal is lower than the expected range, which can result from a signal short to ground, a sensor fault, or an open or high-resistance signal or ground path.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Sensor fault
  3. Open or high-resistance signal/ground circuit

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light may be on
  • Reduced engine power
  • Poor acceleration or turbo response

How to diagnose it

  1. Use freeze-frame and live data to confirm that wastegate sensor B reads low and compare it with the commanded actuator position.
  2. Inspect sensor B's connector and harness for corrosion, damaged insulation, pinched wires, or contact with ground.
  3. Check sensor B's signal wire for a short to ground and inspect its ground and reference connections using the wiring diagram.
  4. Measure the signal and check circuit continuity and resistance against the manufacturer's specification, looking for an open or high-resistance connection.
  5. If the wiring and connections pass, test wastegate sensor B and its actuator feedback before replacing the sensor.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a corroded or loose sensor B connector.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to ground or a damaged ground connection.
  • Repair an open or high-resistance section of the sensor B signal or ground circuit.
  • Replace wastegate position sensor B if it produces a low signal despite a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

The module may limit boost or put the engine into limp mode, so avoid hard acceleration, towing, and high-speed driving. Stop somewhere safe if the power loss makes it difficult to keep up with traffic.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
