What it means
The TCM detects that the transmission range sensor mechanical alignment is outside the calibration window. Selector positions read with offset across the entire travel.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The transmission range sensor must align mechanically with the selector shaft so its readings correspond to each gear position. P2806 sets when the transmission control unit detects an offset across selector travel, commonly from shifted linkage or a sensor that has moved on its mount.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Selector linkage shifted on the sensor shaft
- Sensor mounting bolts loose
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and compare scan-tool range readings with the actual selector position across the positions that can be checked safely.
- Inspect the selector linkage and its connection to the sensor shaft for looseness or movement.
- Check the range sensor mounting bolts and witness marks for evidence that the sensor has shifted.
- Inspect the connector and wiring to rule out an electrical fault that could imitate an alignment problem.
- Set or verify sensor alignment only using the manufacturer’s procedure and compare each position reading with its specification.
Common fixes
- Tighten loose range sensor mounting hardware to the manufacturer’s specification.
- Reposition the selector linkage on the sensor shaft if it has shifted.
- Adjust the range sensor alignment using the specified procedure.
- Replace damaged linkage or a sensor that cannot hold alignment.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if the displayed range is offset, shifts are harsh or delayed, or limp mode occurs; incorrect range recognition can affect gear selection. Stop if Park or the selected drive range is not reliably recognized.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
