OBD-II fault code

P27A0: Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Range Signal Circuit High

What it means

Voltage on the 4WD range signal line is above the expected window. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The 4WD range sensor sends a voltage signal representing the transfer-case position to the control module. This code sets when the signal is above its expected electrical range, which may be caused by a wire shorted to battery voltage, an open sensor element, or poor contact at corroded connector pins.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to B+
  2. Open sensor element
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check engine or 4WD warning light may be on
  • Selected 4WD range may display incorrectly or not at all
  • 4WD range selection may be unavailable

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and review live range-signal voltage, reported transfer-case position, and related 4WD circuit codes.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector and harness for damaged insulation, corrosion, water intrusion, pushed-back pins, or contact with a battery-voltage wire.
  3. Check the sensor's supply and ground according to the manufacturer's wiring information to rule out a supply fault.
  4. With the circuit isolated as specified by the manufacturer, test the signal wire for a short to battery voltage and verify connector continuity.
  5. If wiring and connections are sound, test the range sensor through each transfer-case position and compare output with the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean or replace corroded range-sensor connector terminals.
  • Repair a signal wire shorted to battery voltage.
  • Repair an open sensor circuit or damaged connection.
  • Replace a range sensor with an open or failed element.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid relying on the range indication or selecting demanding 4WD operation while the signal is high and the actual transfer-case position is uncertain. An incorrect range indication can leave you with less traction or gearing than expected.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
