OBD-II fault code

P2771: Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Low Switch Circuit

What it means

The 4WD-Low engagement switch circuit is faulty. The transmission and chassis controllers cannot tell whether the transfer case is in low range.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The 4WD Low switch reports whether the transfer case is in low range so the vehicle’s control modules can display and manage that status. The controller monitors the switch circuit for a valid indication. This code sets when that circuit is faulty, so the modules may not be able to determine whether low range is engaged.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Switch contacts worn or corroded
  2. Broken wire to switch

Symptoms

  • 4WD Low indicator or warning light may be on
  • 4WD Low may not engage or its status may display incorrectly

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool to read transfer-case status and save freeze-frame data and related four-wheel-drive codes.
  2. Check whether the 4WD Low indicator matches the transfer case’s actual position, using the vehicle’s normal engagement procedure.
  3. Inspect the 4WD Low switch, connector, and nearby wiring for corrosion, looseness, physical damage, or broken conductors.
  4. Check switch state in scan-tool data while operating the transfer case, if supported, and note whether the state changes reliably.
  5. Test switch continuity and the circuit to the controller according to the manufacturer’s wiring diagram and specification.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose connector at the 4WD Low switch.
  • Repair a broken or damaged switch wire.
  • Clean or replace corroded switch terminals.
  • Replace the 4WD Low switch if its contacts fail testing.

Can I keep driving?

Do not rely on the 4WD Low indicator or assume low range engaged when the status is uncertain; use the vehicle’s normal operating range and avoid terrain that requires low range. Incorrect transfer-case status can affect traction and vehicle control.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
