OBD-II fault code

P2774: Four Wheel Drive (4WD) Low Switch Circuit High

What it means

Voltage on the 4WD-Low switch line is above the expected window. Usually an open switch or a short to battery.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The 4WD Low switch circuit tells the controller whether the transfer case is in low range. The controller monitors voltage on the switch signal line. This code sets when voltage is above the expected window, which may mean the switch contacts are open, the wire is shorted to battery voltage, or a connector has a poor connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open switch contacts
  2. Switch wire shorted to B+
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • 4WD Low indicator or warning light may be on
  • 4WD Low may not be recognized when engaged
  • 4WD Low status may display incorrectly

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and compare scan-tool 4WD Low switch status with transfer-case position and related codes.
  2. Check whether the vehicle fails to recognize low range when it is selected using the normal engagement procedure.
  3. Inspect the switch, connector, and wiring for an open circuit, short to battery voltage, corrosion, or loose terminals.
  4. Watch the switch status in live data while moving the transfer case between ranges, if scan-tool data is available.
  5. Test the switch contacts and circuit for an open or short to power according to the manufacturer’s wiring diagram and specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair an open or damaged wire in the 4WD Low switch circuit.
  • Repair wiring shorted to battery voltage.
  • Clean or replace corroded connector terminals and secure the connection.
  • Replace the 4WD Low switch if its contacts remain open when they should change state.

Can I keep driving?

Do not assume low range is engaged if the vehicle does not recognize it; avoid routes that require low range until the status is confirmed. Incorrect transfer-case status can affect gearing and traction.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
