OBD-II fault code

P2770: Torque Converter Clutch Circuit High

What it means

The controller detects a high electrical condition in the torque converter clutch circuit. This code does not specifically identify an open solenoid coil or a short to battery.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The torque converter clutch solenoid controls whether the torque converter clutch applies to reduce slip between the engine and transmission. The transmission controller monitors the clutch circuit’s electrical condition. This code sets when the circuit signal is higher than the expected range; it does not by itself show whether the cause is an open circuit, a short, or a failed solenoid.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Damaged, open, or shorted wiring
  2. Faulty torque converter clutch solenoid
  3. Poor electrical connection

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check related transmission codes and torque-converter clutch command or status before clearing anything.
  2. Inspect the wiring and connectors between the transmission controller and torque converter clutch solenoid for damage, corrosion, loose terminals, or fluid intrusion.
  3. Compare commanded clutch operation with available circuit or solenoid data to see whether the high condition occurs when the clutch is commanded.
  4. Test the clutch circuit for opens, shorts, and poor connections using the manufacturer’s wiring diagram and specification.
  5. If the harness and connections pass, test the torque converter clutch solenoid as specified by the manufacturer.

Common fixes

  • Repair damaged wiring or replace corroded terminals in the clutch circuit.
  • Restore a loose or poor connection at the transmission or controller connector.
  • Replace the torque converter clutch solenoid if it fails testing.
  • Repair an internal transmission connection if testing locates the fault inside the transmission.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle still shifts normally, limit driving and avoid towing or heavy loads until the circuit is checked. Harsh, delayed, slipping, or shuddering shifts can worsen transmission damage; stop driving if it loses drive or enters limp mode.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
