What it means
The current through the range select motor exceeds the limit. Mechanism is binding or shorted.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The transmission range select motor moves the range-selection mechanism between gear positions. P272B sets when the module detects more current than expected in the motor circuit, which can indicate a binding mechanism or an internal motor short.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Shift mechanism binding from corrosion
- Internal short in motor winding
Symptoms
- Check engine or transmission warning light on
- Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
- Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
- Slipping or shuddering during gear changes
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and related transmission codes, and note which range selection was occurring when the excessive current was detected.
- Secure the vehicle and inspect the range select mechanism and linkage for corrosion, obstruction, or visible binding.
- Inspect the motor connector and wiring for damaged insulation, corrosion, loose terminals, or a short between conductors.
- Check the motor circuit for a short and measure motor winding resistance using the manufacturer's specification.
- If the circuit and winding pass, test motor movement and current draw while the mechanism is operated according to the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Remove corrosion or an obstruction that is binding the range select mechanism.
- Repair shorted or damaged motor wiring.
- Clean or replace corroded motor connector terminals.
- Replace the range select motor if its winding is shorted or it draws excessive current with a free-moving mechanism.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid driving if the vehicle cannot select or hold the intended gear, or if the displayed range is unreliable. Secure it against rolling and get assistance if selection binds; forcing the mechanism can worsen damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
