OBD-II fault code

P272A: Transmission Range Select Motor Control Circuit

What it means

A general fault in the transmission range select motor control circuit. The motor that physically moves the gear range selector (P-R-N-D) does not respond correctly.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission range select motor moves the mechanism that selects Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive on vehicles equipped with this system. The control module sets P272A when it detects a general fault in the motor control circuit or the motor does not respond as expected, without identifying a specific high- or low-current condition.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Motor winding open or shorted
  2. Open or shorted control wire

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and scan for related range-selection or transmission codes before attempting to change gears.
  2. With the vehicle secured, check whether the displayed or reported gear range matches the selected position and note any failure to engage.
  3. Inspect the range select motor connector and wiring for damage, loose terminals, corrosion, or signs of water entry.
  4. Test the motor winding and control wires for opens or shorts using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the electrical checks pass, inspect the range select mechanism for binding and confirm that the motor moves it through the commanded positions.

Common fixes

  • Repair an open or shorted range select motor control wire.
  • Clean, secure, or repair corroded motor connector terminals.
  • Replace the range select motor if its winding is open or shorted.
  • Repair binding in the range select mechanism if it prevents commanded movement.

Can I keep driving?

Do not drive if the indicated gear does not match the selected range, or if the vehicle cannot reliably enter Park or Drive. Secure the vehicle against rolling and arrange assistance if the selector sticks or drive is lost.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
