OBD-II fault code

P272D: Park Pawl Motor Control Circuit Current Too High

What it means

The current through the park pawl motor exceeds the limit. Park pawl mechanism binding or motor shorted.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The park pawl motor drives the mechanism that locks the transmission in Park or releases it. P272D sets when the motor circuit draws more current than the module allows, commonly because the pawl mechanism is binding or the motor winding is internally shorted.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Park pawl mechanism binding from wear or corrosion
  2. Internal short in motor winding

Symptoms

  • Check-engine or transmission warning light on
  • Park engagement or release may fail
  • Transmission may not shift out of Park

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and related codes, and note whether the high current occurred while engaging or releasing the park pawl.
  2. Keep the vehicle secured against rolling and check whether Park engages and releases without forcing the selector or mechanism.
  3. Inspect the park pawl mechanism for visible corrosion, wear, or obstruction that could make movement bind.
  4. Inspect the motor connector and wiring for shorts, damaged insulation, corrosion, and loose terminals.
  5. Measure the motor winding and, if it is within specification, check motor current and mechanism movement using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clear corrosion or an obstruction that binds the park pawl mechanism.
  • Repair shorted or damaged motor wiring.
  • Clean or replace corroded park pawl motor connector terminals.
  • Replace the park pawl motor if its winding is shorted or current remains excessive with the mechanism free to move.

Can I keep driving?

Use the parking brake and do not assume Park will hold the vehicle until engagement is confirmed. If Park will not release or engage reliably, do not drive; secure the vehicle and arrange assistance.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
