OBD-II fault code

P2700: Transmission Friction Element A Apply Time Range/Performance

What it means

The transmission control module measured an apply time for friction element A (clutch or band) outside the calibrated window. Indicates worn clutch material, low line pressure, or a degrading shift solenoid.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The transmission control module estimates how long friction element A, a clutch or band inside the transmission, takes to apply during a shift. P2700 sets when that measured apply time falls outside the module's calibrated range, which can point to slow or abnormal engagement of element A.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Clutch pack worn
  2. Shift solenoid response degraded
  3. Line pressure too low

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and transmission codes, then note which shift or operating conditions triggered the element A apply-time fault.
  2. Check the transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure, since low or degraded fluid can reduce apply pressure.
  3. Inspect accessible transmission wiring and connectors for damage or poor connections that could affect shift control.
  4. Use a scan tool to compare commanded shifts, element A apply data, and pressure-control or solenoid data under the conditions in the freeze-frame.
  5. If fluid and electrical checks do not explain the fault, have line pressure and the element A hydraulic circuit checked to distinguish low pressure, solenoid response, and clutch wear.

Common fixes

  • Correct the transmission fluid level or condition if it is outside the manufacturer's requirements.
  • Repair damaged wiring or connector faults affecting transmission control.
  • Replace a pressure or shift solenoid only if testing confirms its response is faulty.
  • Repair or rebuild the element A clutch or band if internal wear is confirmed.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid towing, hard acceleration, and long trips; slipping or delayed engagement can worsen transmission damage, and the vehicle may enter a limited gear mode. If it slips badly, loses drive, or shifts unpredictably, stop in a safe place and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
