OBD-II fault code

P2702: Transmission Friction Element C Apply Time Range/Performance

What it means

The time required to apply friction element C is outside the expected window. Worn clutch, low pressure, or sticky valve.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The transmission control module monitors the apply time of friction element C, an internal clutch or band used during certain gear changes. P2702 sets when element C engages outside its calibrated time range, suggesting an apply-pressure, hydraulic, or friction problem in that path.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Worn clutch friction plates
  2. Pressure control solenoid drift
  3. Internal hydraulic leak in apply circuit

Symptoms

  • Check engine or transmission warning light on
  • Harsh, delayed, or missing shifts
  • Possible limp mode (locked in one gear)
  • Slipping or shuddering during gear changes

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame and transmission data, then identify the gear change associated with the element C apply-time fault.
  2. Check transmission fluid level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure, since low or degraded fluid can affect element C application.
  3. Inspect transmission wiring and connectors for damage or poor contact that could interfere with solenoid commands.
  4. Use a scan tool to review commanded shifts, element C apply-time data, and pressure-control solenoid response.
  5. If those checks do not locate the cause, test line pressure and the element C apply circuit for leakage or restriction before assessing the clutch pack.

Common fixes

  • Correct low fluid or service fluid that does not meet the manufacturer's condition requirements.
  • Repair damaged wiring or loose transmission connectors.
  • Replace a pressure-control solenoid if testing confirms it is drifting or failing to respond.
  • Repair the element C hydraulic circuit or clutch pack if internal leakage or wear is verified.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid heavy loads, towing, and unnecessary driving because slipping or shuddering during shifts can damage the transmission further. If it loses drive or shifts unpredictably, stop safely and arrange recovery.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
