OBD-II fault code

P2645: A Rocker Arm Actuator Control Circuit / Open Bank 1

What it means

The controller cannot drive the rocker arm switching actuator A on bank 1 (used in cylinder deactivation systems such as VTEC, AFM, MDS). The valve lift mode cannot be switched.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The rocker arm actuator A on bank 1 switches the valve-lift mode on that cylinder bank, typically using an oil control valve commanded by the engine controller. P2645 is set when the controller detects an open in the actuator A control circuit, so it cannot drive the bank 1 switching actuator as commanded.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open coil in oil control valve
  2. Broken control wire

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Reduced engine power or acceleration
  • Rough running or engine misfire

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check for related rocker actuator or misfire codes before clearing anything.
  2. Identify bank 1 and actuator A using the vehicle service information, then inspect its connector and harness for disconnection, damage, or oil contamination.
  3. Check the actuator A circuit for an open between the controller connector and the bank 1 actuator.
  4. Measure the actuator coil according to the manufacturer's specification to check for an open winding.
  5. If the wiring and coil pass, test the controller's actuator command and circuit driver using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or clean the bank 1 actuator A connector if contact is poor.
  • Repair an open or broken actuator control wire.
  • Replace the bank 1 actuator A oil control valve if its coil is open.
  • Repair or replace a confirmed faulty controller circuit driver.

Can I keep driving?

A short gentle drive may be possible if the engine runs smoothly, but reduced acceleration or misfiring can make driving unsafe. Stop if the misfire is severe or the warning light flashes, since continued driving can damage the catalytic converter.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
