OBD-II fault code

P2617: Crankshaft Position Signal Output Circuit/Open

What it means

The crankshaft position signal output circuit is open or has an open-circuit fault. The code concerns the output circuit and does not identify which connected module is affected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The crankshaft position signal output circuit carries engine-speed and position timing information from the engine controller to another connected module or system. P2617 sets when this output path is open, such as from a broken wire or an internally open output buffer; it does not identify which receiving module is affected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open wire between ECU and downstream module
  2. Output buffer internally open

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Engine may crank longer, run poorly, or fail to start

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and related crankshaft or communication codes, and note whether the engine cranks longer or stalls.
  2. Inspect the crankshaft signal output connectors and visible harness for disconnection, damage, corrosion, or loose terminals.
  3. Use the wiring diagram to identify the output circuit's controller and receiving end, then check continuity for an open.
  4. Check connector terminal fit and any accessible splices along the output path for an intermittent open.
  5. If the wiring is intact, test the controller's output buffer and signal according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose output-circuit connector and secure the harness.
  • Repair a broken or damaged wire between the controller and receiving module.
  • Restore a poor splice or terminal connection in the crankshaft signal path.
  • Repair or replace the controller only if its output buffer is confirmed open.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine starts and runs normally, a short trip may be possible, but the engine may crank longer, run poorly, or fail to start. Avoid driving if it stalls or has unreliable starting.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
