OBD-II fault code

P2619: Crankshaft Position Signal Output Circuit High

What it means

The crankshaft position signal output circuit voltage is above the expected level.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The crankshaft position signal output circuit carries an engine-speed and crank-position signal for use by other vehicle systems. The control module monitors the output and sets P2619 when its voltage is higher than expected, which can happen if the wire is shorted to battery power or the output stage cannot pull the signal down.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Output wire shorted to B+
  2. Output buffer open
  3. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Engine may crank longer, run poorly, or fail to start

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and check whether the engine had starting or running trouble when P2619 set.
  2. Inspect the crankshaft signal output wire and connectors for damage, corrosion, loose pins, or contact with a power feed.
  3. With the wiring diagram, check whether the output circuit is shorted to battery voltage and compare readings with the manufacturer's specification.
  4. Check continuity through the output wire and its connections to locate an open or high-resistance connection.
  5. If the wiring and connections are sound, test the output buffer and related module according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure corroded or loose output-circuit connector pins.
  • Repair a damaged output wire or a short to battery power.
  • Repair or replace a failed output buffer or module after confirming the wiring is sound.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine starts and runs normally, limit driving and arrange diagnosis soon; stop if it stalls, runs very poorly, or becomes difficult to start. A faulty crankshaft signal output can worsen into a no-start or unexpected engine stall.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
