What it means
Throttle/fuel inhibit A reads stuck low — short to ground or permanently asserted. ECM may treat it as continuous inhibit and refuse normal operation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The throttle/fuel inhibit circuit A carries a safety input that can tell the ECM to restrict throttle or fuel. P2554 sets when the input is below its expected range, commonly because the signal is grounded or the circuit is being interpreted as continuously asserted.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Inhibit wire shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Engine may not start or may stall
- Reduced or unavailable throttle response
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check live data for inhibit A to confirm the input is low when the safety function should be inactive.
- Inspect the inhibit A harness for chafing through to ground, especially near brackets and connector entries, and check the connector for corrosion or pushed-back pins.
- Gently move the harness and connector while watching the live input to see whether the low reading changes.
- Use the wiring diagram to test the signal for a short to ground and check circuit continuity against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the wiring is intact, test the inhibit switch or input and compare its state with the connected module's reported request.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed inhibit A wiring that is contacting ground.
- Clean and secure corroded or loose connector terminals.
- Repair an open or high-resistance connection in the inhibit A circuit.
- Replace a faulty inhibit switch or input after confirming the harness is sound.
Can I keep driving?
If the vehicle will not start, stalls, or has reduced throttle response, avoid driving it in traffic or where dependable acceleration is needed. A continuously asserted inhibit can prevent normal engine operation.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
