What it means
Throttle/fuel inhibit B signal reads in range but plausibility fails — does not assert/release as expected.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The throttle/fuel inhibit B circuit carries an enable or inhibit signal used by a system such as security or transmission control to allow or prevent engine operation. P218C sets when the B signal is electrically in range but its state or timing does not match what the control module expects, such as failing to assert or release when commanded.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Inhibit logic mismatch
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
- Sensor mounting loose - signal damping
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Engine may crank without starting or fail to start
- Reduced throttle response or engine power
- Security or transmission warning light may come on
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan relevant modules for related inhibit, security, transmission, or throttle codes to learn when the B signal became implausible.
- Compare the commanded and reported inhibit B states in live data during an authorized start or release attempt.
- Inspect the B circuit connectors and wiring for loose terminals, corrosion, or damage that could cause delayed or inconsistent signal changes.
- Check the signal transition and circuit integrity using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.
- If the circuit switches correctly, test the providing system's inhibit logic and the receiving throttle or fuel-control module for a state mismatch.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged connection in the inhibit B circuit.
- Repair wiring that causes the B signal to change inconsistently.
- Correct a confirmed security or transmission control fault that issues the wrong inhibit state.
- Repair or replace a failed receiving or providing module only after the signal and logic tests identify it.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine sometimes fails to start or power delivery is unpredictable, avoid relying on the vehicle until the fault is diagnosed. A mismatched inhibit B signal can cause a no-start or reduced throttle response.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
