OBD-II fault code

P2553: Throttle/Fuel Inhibit Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

The throttle/fuel inhibit A signal is electrically intact but its value does not match the system context — for example asserted while the immobilizer reports OK, or de-asserted while a hybrid HV interlock is active. The ECM cannot trust the signal.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The throttle/fuel inhibit circuit A reports whether a safety function is requesting that throttle or fuel be inhibited. The ECM sets P2553 when the signal is electrically present but does not agree with expected system conditions, such as the reported inhibit state conflicting with security or interlock status.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Requesting module sending an inconsistent value
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Engine may not start or may stall
  • Reduced or inconsistent throttle response

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review live data for inhibit A alongside the relevant security or interlock status to identify the conflicting states.
  2. Check for related codes in the module making the inhibit request, since its reported state may be inconsistent.
  3. Inspect the inhibit A sensor or switch mounting and its wiring for looseness, damage, corrosion, or movement that could distort the reading.
  4. Operate the relevant switch or interlock while watching live data to see whether inhibit A changes consistently with the system state.
  5. If the signal remains implausible, test the input device and circuit against the manufacturer's specification, then compare the requesting module's output with the ECM reading.

Common fixes

  • Secure a loose inhibit A sensor or switch and its connector.
  • Repair damaged or corroded inhibit A wiring and terminals.
  • Replace an inhibit A input device that fails its specified response test.
  • Diagnose and repair the requesting module if its inhibit value conflicts with its own system status.

Can I keep driving?

If starting or throttle response is intermittent, avoid driving where a stall or loss of acceleration could be hazardous. A conflicting inhibit request may cause the engine to refuse operation or respond unpredictably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
