OBD-II fault code

P2513: Event Data Recorder Request Circuit Low

What it means

The event data recorder request circuit signal is below the expected range. The code does not establish the circuit’s request logic or the effect on event recording.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The event data recorder (EDR) request circuit carries a request signal monitored by the vehicle control module. P2513 sets when the signal is below its expected range, which can result from a wire shorted to ground or a poor connection; it does not establish whether event recording is affected.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Request wire shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Event-data-recorder warning or service message, if equipped
  • No noticeable driving symptoms may occur

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and any EDR or service message to determine when the low request-circuit signal was detected.
  2. Identify the EDR request wire from the vehicle wiring information and inspect its harness for chafing or contact with ground.
  3. Check the connector for corrosion, damaged terminals, or poor pin fit that could pull down the signal.
  4. Test the request wire for a short to ground and check continuity through the connector using the specified circuit procedure.
  5. Compare the signal and EDR input readings with the manufacturer's specification to isolate wiring from a module fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair a request wire shorted to ground.
  • Clean or repair corroded EDR request-circuit connector terminals.
  • Repair chafed harness insulation and secure the wire away from ground points.
  • Repair or replace a failed EDR input stage if the circuit tests correctly.

Can I keep driving?

Normal driving may be unaffected, but the EDR request function or event recording may be compromised. Arrange repair soon and avoid disturbing restraint-system wiring.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
