OBD-II fault code

P2512: Event Data Recorder Request Circuit/Open

What it means

An open circuit or fault is detected in the event data recorder request circuit. The code does not establish how the vehicle records crash data or whether recording is affected.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The event data recorder (EDR) request circuit carries a request signal between vehicle electronics and the recorder system. P2512 sets when the control module detects an open or interrupted circuit; the code alone does not show whether event data can be recorded.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Open request wire or unplugged module
  2. Failed input stage in the EDR
  3. Pin pushed back out of connector body

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Event-data-recorder warning or service message, if equipped
  • No noticeable driving symptoms may occur

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and any EDR or service messages to establish when the request-circuit fault was detected.
  2. Use the vehicle information to identify the EDR request circuit and inspect accessible connectors for disconnection or damage.
  3. Check that connector pins are seated and look for a pushed-back terminal or an open wire along the request circuit.
  4. With power isolated as specified by the service information, test request-wire continuity and connector contact through the circuit.
  5. Compare circuit and EDR input checks with the manufacturer's specification before concluding that the recorder input has failed.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect an unplugged EDR request-circuit connector.
  • Reseat or replace a pushed-back or damaged connector terminal.
  • Repair an open request wire.
  • Repair or replace a failed EDR input stage if circuit testing confirms the fault is inside the module.

Can I keep driving?

This code may not affect normal driving, but it can mean the EDR request function is unavailable or uncertain. Arrange repair soon, and avoid disturbing EDR or restraint-system wiring.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
