OBD-II fault code

P249A: EGR Cooler Bypass Position Sensor Circuit High Bank 2

What it means

Same as P2495 on bank 2. EGR mixes inert exhaust into intake to lower combustion peak temperature — too little raises NOx, too much causes misfires and rough running.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 2 EGR cooler bypass position sensor reports valve position to the control module. This code sets when its signal rises above the plausible circuit range, which can result from a signal shorted to supply or another circuit connection fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to supply
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Pinging or knocking under load
  • Power loss and hesitation
  • Possible rough idle
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and inspect Bank 2 bypass sensor live data to confirm the signal is high when the code sets.
  2. Inspect the Bank 2 sensor connector and harness for pinched insulation or a signal wire touching a power supply.
  3. Check connector pins for corrosion, looseness, or poor contact that could distort the sensor circuit.
  4. Test the signal wire for a short to supply and verify the sensor reference and ground circuits against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring checks pass, test Bank 2 sensor output against the manufacturer's specification before condemning the sensor.

Common fixes

  • Secure or clean poor Bank 2 sensor connector contacts.
  • Repair a pinched Bank 2 harness or signal wire shorted to supply.
  • Repair a faulty sensor ground or reference connection.
  • Replace the Bank 2 bypass position sensor if it produces an out-of-range signal with sound wiring.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly, a short, gentle drive is usually possible; avoid heavy loads if it pings, hesitates, or loses power. The fault can disrupt EGR control and increase NOx emissions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
