OBD-II fault code

P2495: EGR Cooler Bypass Position Sensor Circuit High Bank 1

What it means

Same as P2492 with the signal voltage above the plausible range. EGR mixes inert exhaust into intake to lower combustion peak temperature — too little raises NOx, too much causes misfires and rough running.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The Bank 1 EGR cooler bypass position sensor reports valve position to the control module. This code sets when its signal rises above the plausible circuit range, which can happen if the signal is shorted to a supply or the circuit has a connection fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal shorted to supply
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Pinging or knocking under load
  • Power loss and hesitation
  • Possible rough idle
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and inspect Bank 1 bypass sensor live data to confirm the signal is high when the code sets.
  2. Inspect the Bank 1 sensor connector and harness for pinched insulation or a signal wire touching a power supply.
  3. Check connector pins for corrosion, looseness, or poor contact that could distort the sensor circuit.
  4. Test the signal wire for a short to supply and verify the sensor reference and ground circuits against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring checks pass, test Bank 1 sensor output against the manufacturer's specification before condemning the sensor.

Common fixes

  • Secure or clean poor Bank 1 sensor connector contacts.
  • Repair a pinched Bank 1 harness or signal wire shorted to supply.
  • Repair a faulty sensor ground or reference connection.
  • Replace the Bank 1 bypass position sensor if it produces an out-of-range signal with sound wiring.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly, a short, gentle drive is usually possible; avoid heavy loads if it pings, hesitates, or loses power. The fault can disrupt EGR control and increase NOx emissions.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
