What it means
Same as P2496 on bank 2. EGR mixes inert exhaust into intake to lower combustion peak temperature — too little raises NOx, too much causes misfires and rough running.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The Bank 2 EGR cooler bypass position sensor provides valve-position feedback to the control module. This code sets when that signal becomes intermittent or erratic, preventing the module from relying on Bank 2 feedback consistently.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Intermittent contact at connector
- Connector with intermittent contact under vibration
- Harness routed against vibrating component
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Pinging or knocking under load
- Power loss and hesitation
- Possible rough idle
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and look for dropouts or sudden jumps in Bank 2 bypass position live data.
- Inspect the Bank 2 sensor connector and harness routing for loose pins, chafing, heat damage, or contact with a vibrating part.
- With the engine safely stationary, monitor the sensor signal while gently checking the accessible harness and connector for changes or dropouts.
- Check connector pin tension and test the signal, reference, and ground circuits for intermittent opens or shorts against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the circuit remains stable during testing, check for a failing Bank 2 position sensor or a bypass valve that binds during movement.
Common fixes
- Reseat and secure a loose Bank 2 sensor connector.
- Repair intermittent wiring damage and secure the harness away from vibration or heat.
- Restore poor connector pin contact or a faulty ground connection.
- Replace the Bank 2 position sensor if its signal remains erratic with stable wiring.
Can I keep driving?
Limit driving if the signal fault causes pinging, hesitation, or rough running, and avoid heavy loads. An intermittent fault can return unexpectedly and may increase NOx emissions or worsen drivability.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
